Saturday night was UFC 117. I don't normally blog about the fights, but this fight night was unbelievable, so I am going to do my own post-fight breakdown. If you hate fights, stop reading now, this is all there is today folks. Really.
First, my brother, Brandon, took me on a date. We went to a little place in Salt Lake to watch the fights, and eat chips and salsa and a variety of fried items, which gave my brother food poisoning. But, before the up-chucking, there was some serious fighting! UFC style. Here are my thoughts:
1. Roy Nelsen deserves some props! Are you kidding me? This guy took hit after hit after hit after hit... you get the point... and just kept standing there. Either he was on meth and wasn't feeling any pain at all, or his cranium is made of concrete... either way, the guy has a heart of solid gold, and I am officially a fan.
2. Stefen Struve... dude your bottom lip was detached in several spots. FYI. I can take a lot, but that was SICK and WRONG. The fact that you came out in the 2nd round with a dangling lip and knocked the dude out was.... well, it was hilarious.
3. Matt Hughes. Save a horse, ride a cowboy! You have some MAD wrestling skills, but I had totally counted you out in this fight against Ricardo. Props to you. I am giving you a standing "O" as I type this. Niiiiiiice!
4. Now, for my most opinionated thoughts: first- Thiago Alves: What were you thinking? You were a half pound over, and you didn't even try to cut it. I have a BIG problem with guys who don't make weight. You know what weight class you are in, you found out months ago you would have this fight, you have a team of guys who train you and coach you, MAKE WEIGHT. There is no excuse for not making weight. NONE. So, when Fitch beat you AGAIN... I hollered extra loud!!! Show some respect.
5. Big mouth Chael Sonnen. You did what you said you were going to do. You beat up Anderson Silva and most UFC fans loved watching it. You shut him down for four and a half rounds. You looked impressive, conditioned, calm, methodical, and like you just might be the best. The triangle will be forgotten, I guarantee, but the way you dominated The Spider for four and a half rounds will NEVER be. Way to go...
And Brandon, thanks for hangin!
