Vision

Today at work, I was walking down the hall to show another employee where a particular office was, we came upon a blind student who was clearly trying to find something. I put my hand on his shoulder and asked if I could help him. He told me that he just needed a chair. There is a chair in that hallway, but it is on the opposite side of the hallway from where he was. So, I took his hand and walked him over there and watched him pull out a bag of cookies that I figured he had bought from the vending machine. Then, I walked away and finished doing what I was doing.

I haven't stopped thinking about that one minute interaction. This sort of thing happens every minute of everyday. People trying to find what they are looking for, but they can't see it. He was so close! He was only about six or seven feet away from his destination, but without help, he may have never found it. He knew it was there...some where. But, he couldn't see it. He couldn't find it. He needed a little more help then just his walking stick.

I am that student in so many ways. I know the destination. I know what I am looking for, but sometimes because of my own choices, I can't see it. I can't get there. I can't find it. I need help. No question, people have been put in my path ALL OF MY LIFE to put their hands on my shoulders and guide me. They have been in my life for five minutes, or 32 years, but they have all mattered. They have all been put there to help me and they have.

I have new vision today after a six foot walk in the hallway, with a student who touched my heart.
